Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi on Sunday called President Isaac Herzog to congratulate him on taking office and to send greetings for the Rosh Hashanah holiday that begins Monday evening, according to a statement from Herzog's office.

"The two leaders discussed bilateral issues and shared Egyptian-Israeli interests. Herzog thanked the Egyptian president for the important role that he plays in the pursuit of regional stability and peace," the statement said.
Earlier in the day reports surfaced that el-Sissi will be leading an effort to revive long-stalled peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians that collapsed in 2014.
