For the fifth year in a row, Tamar is the most popular baby name for Jewish girls born in Israel. Over 1,000 baby girls – 1,116 – were given that name in 2020, according to a new report by the Central Bureau of Statistics.

In second place for 2020 was the name Maya, followed by Abigail, and Noa in fourth place.
Among the general population, however, Maya reigned as the most popular name for girls, as 1,133 babies were given that name in 2020.
The most popular name for boys among Jewish Israelis was David, a name chosen for 1,536, or 2.4% of all boys born in Israel in 2020. Coming in second was Lavi, the name chosen for 1,296, or 2.1%, of all baby boys delivered in 2020, followed by Ariel.
While Mohammed remains the most popular name in Israel, particularly among Muslim Israelis, its popularity is on the decline. Among Muslims, 12.5% of all baby boys born in 2020 – 2,394 – were given that name. The most popular name for Muslim girls was Maryam.
