Almog, 71, headed the IDF's Southern Command and since leaving the military, has dedicated his life to ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran, a residential and rehabilitation village he established for individuals suffering from multiple disabilities and complex medical issues. He has also been awarded the Israel Prize for lifetime achievement.
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett lauded the announcement, saying that Almog "represents everything that is good about Israel."
He "embodies military and civilian prowess, deep love for the nation of Israel, for the land and for all humans. This is why I was glad to hand him the Israel Prize for his life's work," Bennett said.
Almog's appointment is subject to approval by a board of trustees. If approved, he will begin his four-year term in September.
