The death toll from a magnitude 6.1 earthquake that shook Afghanistan early Wednesday has risen to at least 1,000 with 1,500 injured, many critically, French news agency AFP reported.

The quake struck about 27 miles from the city of Khost in southeastern Afghanistan at a depth of 31 miles, according to the US Geological Survey. According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Institute (EMSC), the quake was also felt in Pakistan and India.
Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which lies near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
