Meretz leader Nitzan Horowitz announced Tuesday that he will not seek a second term as the party's chairman, but will vie for a spot on its slate for the Nov. 1 elections.

"I have decided not to run for the party's leadership. I'm not leaving politics or the party and I will vie for a slot on our roster for the next Knesset. We have a lot to do; Meretz is a movement based on an idea – not an individual. We are a democratic party and our leaders are elected, serve dutifully, and are replaced," he said in a letter to party members.
Last week saw Deputy Economy Minister Yair Golan announce plans to challenge Horowitz for the leadership of the left-wing party, which has yet to set a date for its primaries.
Former party chief Environmental Protection Minister Tamar Zandberg has yet to announce whether she would be seeking the role again.
