As US President Joe Biden concluded a visit to Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and Saudi Arabia, Iran on Saturday declared sanctions against 61 Americans.

The new names on Iran's "blacklist" include former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo over his support for an organization of Iranian expatriates who oppose the Tehran regime; attorney for former President Donald Trump Rudy Giuliani; and former US National Security Advisor John Bolton.
The Iranian sanctions are mainly symbolic, since the Islamic Republic cannot confiscate any American assets.
However, in the case of Pompeo, past reports have indicated that he might also be a target for Iran's Revolutionary Guards corps, in part because Iran wants to avenge the death of former commander of its elite Quds Force, Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in a US drone strike in January 2020.
Recently, the US has been trying to ascertain whether or Iran is willing to commit not to attack American officials. The US is reportedly willing to propose removing the IRGC from its list of state-sponsored terrorist entities in exchange for such a commitment and as part of the broader attempts to reach a new nuclear deal with Tehran.
