Earlier Sunday, the Israel Police arrested a 17-year-old Palestinian from Ramallah, who was behind the wheel of a car he allegedly stole from the Tel Aviv area. He hit Meshulam in an attempt to crash through a security checkpoint in the Sharon region to avoid being stopped, police reported.
Meshulam, 30, performed his compulsory military service with the Border Police. After he was released from the Border Police, he joined the ranks of the Israel Police as a patrolman, working out of the Kfar Saba station.
"Last night, we lost a dear officer, Staff Sgt. Maj. Barak Meshulam, during an operation in the Sharon region after a Ramallah resident allegedly killed him by running through a police checkpoint in a stolen car," the Israel Police reported.
Meshulam is survived by his widow, two children, his parents and two siblings.
After hitting Meshulam, the driver abandoned the car, and police gave chase. Officers from the Kfar Saba station apprehended the suspect.
After inspecting the scene of the incident. District Police Commander Maj. Gen. Avi Biton issued instructions for the Sharon region anti-crime unit to oversee the investigation in conjunction with detectives from the Central District.
