Safdie was honored for being a source of inspiration to many generations of architects and urban planners, for his transformative contributions to the architectural planning of several national institutions in Israel, and for his ongoing commitment and dedication to the Jewish people and the State of Israel, the university said. Abramović was recognized for her life's work as a daring artist and trendsetter in the field of performance art, and for being a role model and an inspiration for young artists and female artists.
"It is difficult to imagine the Israeli landscape today without Moshe Safdie's remarkable designs. We continue to be inspired by Moshe's carefully planned structures that focus on the needs of the community and society," University of Haifa President Professor Ron Robin said.
With regard to Abramović he said, "We are proud to award our highest honor to the leading artist in the field of performance art and one of the most inspiring artists of our time. Throughout her career, Marina Abramović has set an example as a brave and groundbreaking artist, and as an innovator who seeks to question boundaries – attributes that we at University of Haifa admire and share."
