Israel Hayom publisher Dr. Miriam Adelson is on the verge of buying an ownership interest in the NBA's Dallas Mavericks franchise, currently owned by billionaire Mark Cuban.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Adelson family said it has "entered into binding purchase agreements to acquire majority ownership and the right to serve as Governor of the Dallas Mavericks" together with the Dumont family.

"The Adelson and Dumont families are honored to have the opportunity to be stewards of this great franchise. Through our commitment and additional investment in the team, we look forward to partnering with Mark Cuban to build on the team's success and legacy in Dallas and beyond," the statement read. "The goal is to win and to have a team that proudly represents the greater DFW area and serves as a strong and valuable member of the local community," it continued. "We believe that with this partnership and our commitment to the team, the community, and the fans, the future is bright for the Dallas Mavericks."

The final approval of the deal, worth some 3.5 billion dollars, is likely a few weeks away and is "subject to satisfaction of customary closing conditions and approval of the NBA Board of Governors" and is expected to be finalized by the year's end.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported  that "Dr. Miriam Adelson, the controlling shareholder of Las Vegas Sands Corp., plans to sell $2 billion worth of company stock to purchase a professional sports franchise, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Tuesday."

One of the greatest talents in the world of basketball, the Slovenian Luka Dončić, plays for the Dallas Mavericks, and together with Kyrie Irving has been leading the team. With the completion of the transaction, Dr. Adelson will not be the only one in her family who has made forays into the basketball world: Her son Matan Adelson is the owner of Hapoel Jerusalem.

Meanwhile, Israel Hayom has learned that Dr. Adelson plans to donate some of her money to kibbutzim that came under attack from Hamas on October 7, when the terrorist organization launched an unprecedented assault on Israel and murdered some 1,200 Israeli residents. These funds are unrelated to the NBA deal.

Full disclosure: The Adelson family owns the company that is the primary shareholder in Israel Hayom. Dr. Miriam Adelson is the publisher of Israel Hayom.
