Confronting the Houthi threat: The time is now

With Trump returning and regional tensions shifting, Israel must seize this opportunity to build an international coalition against Iran's dangerous proxy in Yemen.

The missile attacks launched by the Houthis toward Israel must stop by all means. This Yemeni terrorist organization is part of the "axis of resistance" led by Iran. It includes the Palestinian Hamas, the Lebanese Hezbollah as well as Iraqi Shiite militias. The Houthis are intractable and antisemitic enemies. Their motto is clear: "God (Allah) is the greatest and his curse will fall on all Jews. Death to America, death to Israel and total victory of Islam on all continents."

Beyond their hatred of all non-believers and the hunt for Jews, the Houthis control the strategic Bab-el-Mandeb Strait and regularly disrupt international shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Nearly 10% of world trade and 30% of container traffic pass through this route to reach the Suez Canal. The numerous attacks by the Houthis have forced foreign companies to bypass the African continent. Transport costs have increased considerably. Religious fanatics of the worst kind, the Houthis couldn't care less about international laws and treaties. The indifference of the UN and the West is unspeakable and revolting. The strikes recently carried out by the American army do not scare the "madmen of God." How can we dissuade a dangerous Iranian satellite that is nevertheless one of the poorest countries on the planet?

Video: The Israeli strike in Yemen on Dec. 19, 2024

On Dec. 19, 2024, the Israeli Air Force attacked strategic facilities in Yemen for the third time. Unlike the strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, the IDF bombed civilian targets in Sanaa, the capital. It destroyed a power plant and oil installations and the three main ports of this country. This daring and spectacular operation, carried out 2,000 kilometers from our borders, was triggered by a ballistic missile launch. The device was destroyed in flight before entering Israeli airspace. But debris caused damage to a school building in Ramat Gan, a suburb of Tel Aviv. Other debris from interceptors fired at this missile was even found outside the Knesset in Jerusalem.

The Israeli raids did not prevent the Houthis from launching a new "hypersonic" missile the day after. About twenty people were injured in Jaffa.

This situation cannot continue. In no country in the world are hundreds of thousands of people awakened in the middle of the night by alarm sirens and taken refuge in shelters. Since Oct. 7, 2023, the Houthis have fired more than 200 missiles and 170 drones at Israel, most of which were destroyed in flight before reaching our territory. Imagine the human losses and the immense damage without effective air defense…

The Houthis are equipped with hundreds of missiles and sophisticated drones regularly supplied by Iran without any control. In the absence of precise intelligence on the routing of arms smuggling to Yemen, Israel cannot fight the "Houthis Evil" alone. An international coalition with the participation of Saudi Arabia is urgently needed to eradicate Iran's last satellite in the Arabian Peninsula.

The time is right: a ceasefire is, more or less, respected in Lebanon with Hezbollah, an agreement on a pause in hostilities in the Gaza Strip and the release of the hostages is this time possible; after the fall of the Bashar Al-Assad regime, calm reigns, for the time being, on the Syrian border, and on January 20, Donald Trump will move into the White House.

More than ever, Israel is in a strong position to dictate the course of action in close coordination with the new American administration. Faced with the new geopolitical situation, the destruction of Iranian nuclear sites will also have to be carefully planned. With a determined action plan and an iron will, the mission is possible to finally normalize our diplomatic relations with our Arab neighbors.
