Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Thursday that he does not intend to run for another presidential term. He made the remarks to reporters during his flight back from a state visit to Hungary.
According to the Turkish daily Yeni Şafak, Erdogan was responding to a question about his efforts to pass a new constitution, which critics say would entrench presidential powers and further weaken the opposition.
"We are not seeking a new constitution for ourselves but for the country as a whole," Erdogan said during the in-flight interview.
The Turkish president also addressed developments in Syria, warning the new regime in Damascus that it must deal with the Kurdish issue in the country's northeast.

Erdogan's political standing has weakened significantly in recent months, following the jailing of Ankara's mayor and an ongoing economic crisis.
