The opening round of the World Cup continued overnight Saturday into Sunday, with Brazil becoming the first major team to enter the competition. The Seleção had to settle for a draw against Morocco, Qatar secured a historic point against Switzerland and Scotland faced Haiti.
Qatar 1, Switzerland 1
Switzerland were awarded a penalty in the 17th minute, even though it appeared to have followed a clear offside position. Breel Embolo was not concerned, converting to make it 1-0. But Murat Yakin's side repeatedly failed to capitalize on its chances and was punished in the 95th minute, when Boualem Khoukhi headed in the equalizer to give Qatar its first-ever point in the World Cup.
Brazil 1, Morocco 1
The North African team did not come to sit back, and in the 21st minute Ismael Saibari elegantly chipped the ball over Alisson to put Morocco ahead 1-0. Vinicius Junior quickly responded at the other end with a superb individual move and a fine finish in the 32nd minute. The match remained fairly balanced until the final whistle, with a slight edge for the Seleção, but it ended 1-1.
Haiti 0, Scotland 1
Contrary to predictions, it was the modest Central American side, featuring former Maccabi Haifa striker Frantzdy Pierrot, that was better for the vast majority of the match. But one moment of magic made the difference, as John McGinn scored from the center of the box in the 28th minute to hand Scotland victory in the opening round.
Australia 2, Turkey 0
Another major upset came in the "late" match, as Australia stunned Turkey 2-0, defying all expectations and the run of play. The Reds controlled almost the entire match but failed to score. Nestory Irankunda opened the scoring with a brilliant solo effort in the 27th minute, and Connor Metcalfe doubled the lead to seal the deal at the 75th minute.
