Security alertness in the south escalated Sunday after the international airport and the seaport in Aqaba, located in southern Jordan, were evacuated following a "specific and credible threat." Simultaneously, advanced mobile surveillance systems were installed on security vehicles across the communities of Israel's central Arava, as part of an effort to strengthen readiness in the sector.
The US Embassy in Jordan announced that local authorities evacuated both sites in Aqaba, urging American citizens to avoid traveling to those locations and to comply with the security directives issued by Jordanian authorities. The official announcement provided no further details regarding the nature of the threat.
However, the director general of the Aqaba Company for Ports later told Reuters that the seaport was operating normally and had not been evacuated.
Developments on both sides of the border illustrate the acute security sensitivities in the southern region, which features an expansive land border, maritime ports, aviation corridors, and vital civilian and tourism hubs.
Meanwhile, as part of the ongoing reinforcement of defensive readiness along the eastern border, advanced mobile surveillance systems were mounted onto the security vehicles of communities within the Central Arava Regional Council. These systems are designed to enhance observation capabilities and situational awareness in the field, allowing local forces to gain a clearer and more rapid operational picture during both routine operations and emergencies.
The newly deployed systems facilitate both day and night observation, allowing operators to quickly transfer them between different security focal points as needed. This mobility is intended to provide local security forces with greater operational flexibility, enabling a faster and more effective response to field incidents.
The cost of each system is estimated at approximately 100,000 shekels (approximately $28,000). Council officials noted that the installation joins a comprehensive series of strategic measures aimed at bolstering the security apparatus and emergency readiness across these frontier communities.
Standing in the background is the ongoing security cooperation between Israel and Jordan, which persists even during periods of diplomatic tension, public criticism, and vocal opposition within the Jordanian street toward ties with Israel. Despite the friction between outward rhetoric and behind-the-scenes activity, the bilateral cooperation between the two nations remains substantial and relies heavily on shared security interests.
One of the primary factors shaping this strategic relationship is the shared perception of the Iranian threat. Over the years, Israel and Jordan have acted in close coordination to counter subversion attempts, smuggling operations, and hostile threats along the border. This cooperative framework also includes the mutual monitoring of hostile elements and direct tactical coordination between security forces on the ground.
During recent regional conflicts, Jordan also played a role in confronting missiles and drones that violated its sovereign airspace. According to various publications, advanced warning and interception systems operate from its territory, and the Jordanian Muwaffaq Salti Air Base serves as a central hub of operations for US and European forces countering the Iranian threat.
Analysts who have investigated the relationship between the two nations have characterized the connection as an "alliance of necessity, not of convenience." Jordan seeks to safeguard its domestic stability and national sovereignty, while Israel views the stability of the Hashemite Kingdom as a foundational pillar for the security of its eastern border. A weakening of Jordan could, from an Israeli perspective, open an additional active front, while regional escalation simultaneously exposes Jordan itself to direct threats.
The sensitivity in the sector received further validation last month, when it was reported that Shin Bet Director David Zini warned during closed-door deliberations that "the next October 7 will be in Eilat," ordering forces to prepare for an assault scenario against the city.
According to the report, Zini pointed to the potential for a ground infiltration, including from the Jordanian border, as well as a maritime infiltration scenario. The Shin Bet emphasized at the time that there was no concrete intelligence or specific alert, explaining that the directive constituted operational planning and proactive analysis of threats across various sectors.
The deployment of the surveillance systems in the central Arava aligns with a broader institutional effort to reinforce defenses across the south and the eastern border – not based on a localized, fleeting alert, but as a core component of long-term readiness for potential scenarios and closing operational gaps ahead of emergencies.
