Scientists warn that waiting until afternoon to break your fast may profoundly impact long-term health and survival rates.
The European Journal of Clinical Nutrition recently featured a massive study analyzing over 31,000 subjects aged 40 and older, the New York Post reported Monday. The paper noted that this research aimed to correlate lifespan with the exact timing of daily caloric intake.

An increased mortality risk of 29% from all causes was linked specifically to consuming the initial meal after 12 p.m.
Researchers mandated that participants track their food consumption and schedules over a single day. This data established an "eating window" spanning from the first bite to the last.
A distinct correlation became apparent, the organization reported, showing that later breakfast times corresponded directly to amplified health risks.
Subjects eating their morning meal between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. experienced a 10% surge in general mortality threat compared to those consuming food between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m.
This hazard climbed to 19% for individuals delaying their first meal until the window between 10 a.m. and noon, the publication revealed.
Fatalities resulting from cardiovascular episodes – including strokes and heart attacks – mirrored this upward statistical trend.
Breaking a fast after midday was associated with a 46% higher likelihood of cardiovascular death when weighed against the 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. breakfast group, the New York Post detailed.
Average longevity decreased by almost 2.5 years for those aged 50 or older who consistently delayed their meals.
These results merely illustrate an association between abbreviated lifespans and delayed eating. However, they bolster mounting evidence that meal timing profoundly affects physical well-being.

The newspaper highlighted a Mass General Brigham study from last year. That research connected later breakfasts in older age groups to early mortality, alongside oral health complications, fatigue, and depression.
As physiological ailments mounted, individuals tended to shift their breakfast times even later in the day.
Persistent late eating can detrimentally impact the 24-hour biological clock, the media outlet emphasized. This internal disruption frequently triggers elevated stress hormones and blood sugar spikes.
Zhilei Shan, the primary study's senior author, provided context to ScienceAlert. The New York Post relayed his statement, "Later eating should be interpreted as a potential risk marker, and possibly a modifiable behavior, rather than definitive evidence of a direct causal effect," regarding the findings.
The report concluded by noting multiple limitations within the study. These constraints involved the focus on a singular 24-hour dietary window, as well as unmeasured factors like daily activity schedules and sleep cycles.
