A 3 billion euro ($3.48 billion) defense agreement between Israel and Greece was signed on Monday, with Israel set to construct a "multi-layered" defense system for the Greek military, Israel's defense ministry confirmed in a statement.

Greece has dubbed the new program "Achilles Shield," a deal the ministry ranks among the largest in the country's defence history. Never before has the Israeli Ministry of Defense delivered a single, fully integrated array built to counter threats as varied as ballistic missiles, aircraft, and hostile drones. The two countries also finalized a smaller, supplementary contract, valued at 26 million euros, for Israel to provide Greece with drone dome systems.

An approximately €3 billion deal: Israel and Greece have signed the massive "Achilles Shield" agreement, under which Israel will build Greece a multi-layered air defense array based on Israeli systems architecture.

Israel will also broaden its industrial defense ties with Greece, transferring knowledge and technology to local Greek industry, the ministry said. The move builds on continuing talks between the two countries' defense ministries and falls under their Government-to-Government (G2G) cooperation framework.

"This project marks another milestone in defense cooperation between Israel and Greece, a key strategic partner in the Eastern Mediterranean," the ministry's statement read. "Greece's choice of Israeli technology as the backbone of its most ambitious air defense buildup program in the past decade reflects the depth of trust built between the two countries."
