Argentina's president said that Trump might reconsider US stance on British sovereignty, as the UK can't win another war.

The dispute over sovereignty of the Falklands Islands may be reigniting, as Argentinian President Javier Milei reasserted Argentina's claim to the islands this week, as reported by The Guardian.

During a televised address, Milei announced "winds of change" were blowing in Buenos Aires's favor in terms of their claim to the islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas. He indicated that President Donald Trump may be reconsidering the US's position on the matter. "Recently, President Trump declared that the US is re-evaluating its historic position in relation to the Malvinas," he said.

British veteran journalist Max Hastings said that the islands remain a strategic liability and warned that the UK lacks the means to fight again. According to The Times, he said: "Today, we no longer have the means, and probably also not the will… to fight another war for them."

Milei also noted that Britain was facing "multiple crises of a migratory, demographic and economic nature that are unlikely to be resolved. It is clear that they are on a path of decline. Argentina's future, however, is flourishing and will prevail."

As reported by GB News on Thursday, Trump hinted that the US would not come to the UK's aid during a dispute with Argentina over the islands, saying that the UK "weren't there to help me [with Iran]." Milei responded to Trump's comments, calling them a "threat" that was "not innocuous."

The US has previously recognized the UK's de facto administration over the Falkland Islands but has not taken a stance on its sovereignty. In April, it was reported that Washington was potentially reconsidering its stance in retaliation for the NATO allies not joining the Iran war.

In the Thursday interview on GB News, Trump said: "Your country [the UK] was not there to help me. We didn't need help, but I did ask Nato, and I asked your former leader [Keir Starmer], 'Why don't you send a couple of ships?' He said, 'We don't have any.' It was pretty sad, the whole thing."

The UK maintains that its position on the Falklands remains "longstanding and unwavering." In a statement earlier this week, the UK said that "Sovereignty rests with the UK, and the islanders' right to self-determination is paramount. The UK's position is clear. The islanders have repeatedly expressed their wish to remain a British overseas territory."

Amid corruption allegations involving members of his government and poor economic performance, Milei's popularity has fallen to its lowest level since he took office. Some analysts see his renewed focus on the Malvinas as another attempt to create a "smokescreen."
