What began as student protests in France over education conditions and the cost of living has spiraled into clashes with police and looting in cities across Europe, including Paris, Milan and Barcelona. Alongside the anger over rent and energy prices, the protests have also carried political messages and pro-Palestinian agendas. Some of the demonstrations deteriorated into looting of stores, including sporting goods chains and shops selling gear and clothing.
But amid all the chaos, one video drew attention for an entirely different reason. In the viral clip, a man is seen fleeing with a giant metal tray piled high with gelato. Not a luxury handbag, not a new smartphone and not even a pair of designer shoes. Italian ice cream, and plenty of it.
The interesting part came a few seconds later. Instead of vanishing with the loot and enjoying it quietly, the man found himself surrounded by people trying to grab a share of the ice cream.
Of all the things to take, gelato
Even during riots, when everyone is talking about protests, the economy and politics, a tray of gelato can quickly become a real reason to fight.

Stores have been broken into, display windows boarded up and merchandise cleared from shelves. In Milan, even the luxury stores braced for that scenario, but not everyone is looking for a Gucci or Prada bag. Some prefer good running shoes, a waterproof jacket and, in at least one case, an entire tray of gelato.
The sweetest loot of the riots
If Europe continues in this direction, at least there is some comfort in knowing that someone there still knows how to prioritize what truly matters.
Meanwhile, the government of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has tried to restore order to the streets by reinforcing security forces and toughening penalties, including fines for parents of minors involved in acts of vandalism. Hundreds of soldiers have been sent to Milan, while social media has been busy documenting moments that are a little hard to make up.
And perhaps that is the whole story. While politicians try to take control of the riots, the internet has already chosen the most interesting loot. Gucci and Prada will have to wait for next time. This time, it is worth bringing a spoon.
