According to details revealed by The Wall Street Journal, Israel is supplying weapons, intelligence and logistical support to armed groups fighting Hamas. The Israeli Air Force is providing drone cover, and wounded Palestinians have been evacuated to hospitals in Israel. IDF officials warn: “These weapons could ultimately be turned against us.”
While the official figure released by regime authorities stands at 3,117 dead, internal data suggest that more than 30,000 people may have been killed in just two days.
The US president has said he is willing to talk to Iran, but Israel must prove the risks inherent in any negotiations with Tehran. Israel should not sacrifice tangible assets in Syria in exchange for dubious arrangements, nor ignore the Kurds’ cry for help
Israel is acting wisely by walking hand in hand with the Americans. The pills it is forced to swallow along the way are bitter, but the alternative is even worse. One can only hope that if matters reach negotiations, the Americans will limit the talks in time to avoid Iran’s familiar foot-dragging, and press Tehran toward a “dream deal” that includes a complete abandonment of its nuclear and missile programs.
The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier has yet to reach the area of responsibility of US Central Command, while the USS George H.W. Bush has also departed Virginia, with online assessments suggesting it is heading for the region.
