Coalition members are their own worst enemy

The infighting among coalition members has reached new highs that have made it clear the government has zero chances of living out its days. Elections are emerging as the only solution.

The infighting plaguing the coalition has reached new highs, sinking the relationships between its partners to new lows. As it seems, the dissolution of the government and subsequently the Knesset is inevitable.

Unless something unexpected happens – like the state budget finally passing – parliament will end its current term in December, which is also when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has an "exit point" from the coalition deal over the budget.

If it were up to Blue and White leader Benny Gantz, he would vote to again postpone approving the state budget as it would increase the chances of the rotation agreement taking effect and him assuming office as prime minister.

But Gantz does not have the final say. He has to heed the hawkish elements in his party like Justice Minister Avi Nissenkorn and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, who couldn't care less about his aspirations to become prime minister. They believe that by bringing the Likud-led coalition to its knees Blue and White will somehow be able to regain its electorate's trust.

When internal relations between the coalition partners are so tainted that Coalition Chairman Likud MK Miki Zohar – who has now threatened to relinquish the role – declares that the Blue and White party "is a danger to Israel," it is clear that the current coalition has zero chances of survival.

Netanyahu has yet to decide what he will do come December, but elections are emerging as the only solution to the political crisis.

If things go as Netanyahu plans, Israel will be in a different place in terms of the battle against the coronavirus and will have the pandemic firmly under control, leaving the lockdown behind it completely.
