Volker Türk, a bureaucrat cloaked in the grand title of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, unintentionally did the public a great service, especially for parents struggling to explain the concept of hypocrisy to their children. From now on, anyone wanting to illustrate the term "hypocrisy" need look no further than Türk (and the organization he represents). That should clear things up for any child in seconds.
"We must stop this madness," declared Türk in reference to the Israel Defense Forces' intensifying operations against the Hamas terrorist organization, even going so far as to label these actions "ethnic cleansing." None of the events surrounding Gaza over the past year and a half provoked such a reaction from him. Not the barbaric massacre perpetrated by Gaza-based terrorists against Israeli civilians on October 7, 2023. Not the kidnapping of Israeli hostages, including elderly people, infants, and children. Not the torture of captives, the sexual violence, and their use as human shields. Not the relentless rocket fire on Israeli towns and cities. Not the transformation of hospitals and schools in Gaza into military strongholds. Not even the theft of humanitarian aid provided by Israel for the benefit of Gazan civilians.
All these, according to the UN's "Mr. Hypocrisy," are not madness and did not warrant condemnation. Killing Jews and denying them even the most basic human rights is acceptable. But resisting terrorists, defending Israeli civilians, and preventing another Holocaust in miniature? That, in Türk's worldview, is madness. Shedding Jewish blood is permissible; stopping the bloodshed is forbidden.
The upside-down morality of the UN has produced plenty of antisemitic rhetoric over the years. Now it has added a new gem: accusing Israel of ethnic cleansing. Why now? Because of the Trump Plan, and the emergence of a realistic and just proposal to resolve the long-standing conflict between Gaza's Arab population and the Jews of Israel, one that could prevent future violence and war. The Trump plan for the future of Gaza is the UN's worst nightmare precisely because it might actually work.
Just imagine: If Gaza's hopeless population were relocated - under an international agreement - to a friendly destination and resettled there with global support, everyone would benefit. Everyone, that is, except those intent on weaponizing the population in an eternal war against Israel, and of course, UN officials.
If Türk genuinely cared about the future of Gaza's people, he would be the first to support the Trump Plan and push to advance it without delay. Implementing it would free Gazans from Hamas' tyranny and religious extremism. It would give them a chance at a normal life, free of antisemitic indoctrination, gender oppression, and Islamist coercion. Finally, international aid would not be siphoned off by Hamas for tunnel-building and missile smuggling, but instead support education, healthcare, welfare, human capital, and, yes, human rights.
Were it not for the sky-high levels of hypocrisy from Türk and his colleagues in the UN's propaganda machine, such a scenario would be their dream. It would ensure the protection of human rights for both Arabs and Jews, and most importantly, prevent future bloodshed.
But those who claim to champion human rights at the corrupt UN are not genuinely interested in them. They will do everything in their power to prevent Gazans from leaving the ruins their leaders created, and to deny them a better future. Instead, they prefer to keep them as eternal hostages in a cycle of hatred and repression created by Hamas, while accusing a defensive Israel of "ethnic cleansing." They will go on espousing lofty values, all the while condemning both Arabs and Jews to continued suffering.
This, in case you were wondering, is the very definition of hypocrisy, and Volker Türk embodies it perfectly.
