US corporations flexing their muscles

The Marriott hotel chain, Dow Chemical, AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, Airbnb, and American Express are just some of the corporations to announce they would suspend donations to Republican representatives that voted against certifying Joe Biden's election victory.

The United States is sobering up. It's taken some time, but we're finally starting to see change. The protest outside of Congress that quickly turned into a violent coup is a defining moment in US history. The images of rioters brutally murdering a police officer led not just people, but companies and corporations to understand the president's words lead to disaster. Now they're acting like responsible citizens, taking a stance and standing up to the threat.

These massive corporations usually donate to everyone. Both sides of the aisle are acceptable. There is money for Democrats, money for Republicans, and may the best man win. An election is a gamble. Why put yourself at risk when you can have it both ways?

For these corporations, it doesn't matter who wins as long as they enact regulations that are to their benefit. But on January 6, something changed. These corporations, which have thus far refrained from issuing public statements, decided enough was enough.

We're not just talking about social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Blue Cross Blue Shield is a federation of health insurance companies that insures over 100 million US citizens across all 50 states. The numbers speak for themselves; Through its super pac, it has donated nearly a million dollars to Republican candidates and around $400,000 to Democratic ones over the years. Yet this week, the company announced it would suspend its donations to the 147 Republican representatives who voted against certifying Joe Biden's presidential election win.

Blue Cross Blue Shield is not alone: the Marriott hotel chain, Dow Chemical, AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, Airbnb, and American Express have all come out with similar statements. Those who threaten American democracy and undermine its foundations won't see a penny. Wealthy, strong, mainstream America, the one that always takes care to be on good terms with everyone, cannot and will not play the neutral role any longer.

This is unprecedented. It's an understanding that money means responsibility. You can have your freedom of expression, but you cannot lend a hand to anarchy and violence. Words have power. Your actions as politicians have consequences, and you will bear responsibility for your actions.

For four years, the man chosen to head the world's greatest power has done tremendous damage. There is no genie he hasn't let out of the bottle, no pit of hatred he hasn't fallen into, dragging everyone in along with him. He lost. Those who continued to support him and his conduct will pay the price. Corporations are sending a clear message: If you choose to stand with thugs and undermine the foundations of democracy, don't bother asking for our support.
