British stage and film actor Ben Cross, who starred in the Academy Award-winning film Chariots of Fire, died Tuesday after a short illness. He was 72. Released in 1981, Chariots of Fire was Cross' breakthrough role. He went on to star in dozens of films and television shows. The critically acclaimed actor was also a director, writer, and musician.
Among his performances, Cross stared in the 1989 miniseries Twist of Fate, playing an SS officer embroiled in the failed attempt to assassinate Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler, who goes into hiding as a Jew in a concentration camp. After the camp is liberated, he immigrates to Israel ane becomes a high-ranking intelligence officer committed to the Jewish state's security, until his true identity is eventually exposed.
