Talks between Israel and Lebanon over disputed maritime borders have hit a significant snag after both sides raised provocative and extreme proposals in relation to their original positions.
The Lebanese delegation has pushed for an additional 1,430 square kilometers (550 square miles) to be included in Lebanese territory as the country seeks to capitalize on possible natural gas reserves.

In turn, Israel presented a provocative countermeasure of its own, asking for the maritime border to extend into Lebanese territory instead.
The US-mediated indirect talks, hosted by the UN, are the first non-security ones between the two countries, which are technically at war. Israel confirmed the talks are to reconvene next month. No date has been set.
