Bitcoin, the world's best-known cryptocurrency, traded above the $20,000 mark on Wednesday for the first time in its history.

The cryptocurrency peaked at $20,398.50 before falling off to $20,145, registering an intra-day gain of almost four percent.
Back in March, Bitcoin stood at only $5,000, but in the months that followed, it surged to the current highs.
A key driver behind this rise was PayPal's announcement that it would soon embrace cryptocurrencies as a means of payment.
