As a strict third lockdown took place in Israel starting midnight Thursday, police fanned out through the nation's cities to enforce the rigorous restrictions on movement.
At least 12,400 fines were handed out for lockdown violations over the course of the weekend, the Israel Police reported Sunday.

Most of the fines (9,881) were handed to people caught outside the 1,000-meter perimeters from their homes without valid reason. Another 1,793 fines were handed out to businesses caught operating against regulations, and 358 fines were distributed for people participating in banned public activities.
At one gym in Herzliya that was operating despite the lockdown, police caught seven people working out. The gym was fined 5,000 shekels ($1,570) and each of the users was fined 500 shekels ($157).
