A Palestinian suspect was apprehended Tuesday after attempting to stab a security guard at a checkpoint in Smamria, approximately eight miles north of Jerusalem, the Border Police said.

The man, a 51-year-old Nablus resident, tried to cross into Israel at the Qalandiya Checkpoint without the appropriate work permits. When security forces at the scene prevented his entry, he pulled out a screwdriver and tried to stab one of the officers with it, the statement said.
Security personnel at the scene were able to apprehend the man without opening fire and took him into custody for interrogation.
There were no casualties in the incident.
Over on the northern border, a military patrol arrested a Lebanese shepherd trying to infiltrate into Israel.
Lebanese state media reported that the shepherd was "kidnapped" in the Kfar Chouba area in southern Lebanon and taken into Israeli territory.
The Lebanese army identified the shepherd as Hassan Qasem Zahra and said he was guarding livestock when he was detained.

A military spokesperson said that during routine activity in the Mount Dov area, troops "apprehended a suspicious shepherd who intentionally crossed the Blue Line from Lebanon into Israeli territory."
