On Tuesday, Bloomberg Philanthropies announced the 50 Champion Cities, representing the boldest urban innovations of the past year, that will advance to the finalist stage of the 2021 Global Mayors Challenge, a worldwide innovation competition that encourages and spreads the cities' most promising ideas. This year's program focuses on elevating the most important public innovations generated in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
The 50 cities named today hail from 29 nations on six continents. The finalists were elevated based on four criteria: Vision, potential for impact, feasibility, and transferability.
Tel Aviv-Jaffa, one of only two finalist cities from the Middle East, was cited for "engaging youth to make the city's cultural center more resilient."
The other Middle East entry, Amman, made the finals for using "reachability maps" to improve the city's emergency response and guide investments.
