The position will have been vacant for almost a year since Dani Dayan completed his five-year term there. Israel Nitzan was acting consul general.
"After too long a period without a consul in New York, I am happy to appoint Assaf Zamir as consul. Assaf has professional and human capacities that will represent the State of Israel with honor and pride," Lapid said in a statement.
"I thank Foreign Minister Yair Lapid for the confidence. I am proud and impatient to represent the State of Israel and its citizens," Zamir said.
