Labor MK Gilad Kariv, a Reform rabbi, was named on Tuesday as head of the powerful Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee. Ten MKs supported his nomination and none opposed it.
"I will strive to strengthen and safeguard human rights, the democratic resilience of the State of Israel and the independence of the judiciary, which I greatly respect while ensuring access to justice, efficiency, and the ability of citizens to exercise their rights," Kariv said in a statement.
"I hope that we will be able to lead the committee together with respectful and constructive discourse."
Reacting to the appointment, Otzma Yehudit leader MK Itamar Ben-Gvir called Kariv "the number one enemy of Jewish law."
