Five Democratic members of the House of Representatives, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (New York) and Rashida Tlaib (Michigan) are calling on the US Treasury Department to end the tax-exempt status for US organizations that are active in east Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria.

On July 22, Tlaib sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen expressing "extreme concern that US charities are funding and providing direct support to Israeli organizations that are working to expand and perpetuate Israel's illegal settlement enterprise in violation of international law."

The missive cited "dispossession and forced displacement of Palestinian from occupied East Jerusalem neighborhoods" and said that the signatories were worried that these policies violated both US obligations under international law and US federal tax law.

The letter also said that charitable purposes could not be "unlawful or aid and abet serious breaches of international law or internationally recognized human rights."

According to Tlaib, US tax law must not be used to "perpetrate violations against Palestinians."

The letter was included in a tweet Tlaib posted, in which she said that Yellen "must act to enforce US law and end these organizations 501 (c) (3) [tax-exempt] status."
