Journalist Sagi Bashan, who was the first southern district reporter for Channel 12 News when it was first formed in the 1990s as "The News Company," died Saturday after a long battle with cancer. He was 57.

Avi Weiss, the CEO Channel 12 News' parent company Keshet, said, "Our friend Sagi was a dedicated journalist who covered every aspect of life in the south with so much love for its people.
"He was the 'sheriff' there – he knew everyone and everyone knew him. We mourn his death and send our condolences and hugs to his family."
Bashan is survived by four children. He will be laid to rest on Sunday evening in his hometown of Beersheba.
