The incident unfolded Friday evening outside the Noeldnerplatz commuter train station in the German capital.
The 29-year-old Israeli, a Berlin resident, who was wearing a pullover emblazoned with an Israel Defense Forces emblem, was accosted by a man who "addressed him about his faith," police said in a statement.
The Israeli man then he turned toward the person and got an irritant gas sprayed in his face; he was then hit and knocked to the ground. The assailant or assailants fled.
The assaulted man alerted police and emergency personnel treated him at the scene.
