As a way to implement gender-inclusive policies, the issuance is designed to give non-binary, intersex, and gender non-conforming people an option other than 'male' or 'female' on travel documents, Reuters reported.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken notified in June that the 'X' indicator would be offered as an option on passports, following other countries including Canada, Germany, Australia, and India who already offer such.
State Department spokesperson Ned Price mentioned that the US was moving toward adding the 'X' gender stamp as an option for those applying for US passports as well as Consular Reports of Birth Abroad.
"I want to reiterate, on the occasion of this passport issuance, the Department of State's commitment to promoting the freedom, dignity, and equality of all people - including LGBTQI+ persons," Price said.
