Footage of the tragedy posted on social media shows the moment the massive rock detached from the cliff as onlookers try to yell warnings to the boats beneath. At least one of the boats appears to have sunk, while others managed to escape, media reports said.
Romeu Zema, the governor of Minas Gerais, said it is believed that heavy rains had caused the rock to collapse into Furnas Lake. Rescue efforts, which include divers and helicopters, will continue at least through Monday, he said.
