Israel carried out a missile attack near the mostly-abandoned town of Quneitra in southwestern Syria near the Golan Heights border, a Syrian military statement said on Wednesday morning.

At 12:30 am Wednesday, Israel launched missiles from the Golan Heights at Quneitra province, just miles from the border, causing material damage, a Syrian military source told state-run SANA news agency.

Israel has not commented on the reported strike, although it seldom does after its alleged attacks in Syria.

According to Lebanese media reports, the alleged Israeli attack, which involved several surface-to-surface missiles fired from the Golan Heights, focused on a military position belonging to the Syrian military and Iranian militias near the villages of Madinat al-Baath and Rwihinah.

Last week, Syrian news outlets reported that Israel launched surface-to-surface missiles from the Golan Heights at targets near the capital, Damascus. The Syrian military said the attack caused damage but did not elaborate.

The Syrian opposition claimed that the Israeli strike focused on Iranian sites, while Saudi reports said it "focused on sites belonging to the seventh division of Assad's army used by Hezbollah."

Since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, foreign fighters of diverse affiliations have flocked to Syria, most famously the Islamic State terrorist organization.

Hezbollah and other Shiite militant groups backed by Iran have also entered the country in force, prompting hundreds of alleged attacks by Israel over the years.

On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov condemned Israeli strikes in Syria, warning they could lead to an escalation. Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad warned that Syria would respond to Israeli attacks.

Israel has stated it will not allow Iranian-backed troops allied with the Syrian government to operate in Syria.

Wednesday morning's attack was the fifth one attributed to Israel since the beginning of 2022.

On Jan. 31, Syrian air defenses reportedly intercepted an Israeli missile barrage targeting the vicinity of Damascus that resulted in some material damage but no casualties.

On Feb. 9, the IDF said it attacked batteries in Syria after an anti-aircraft missile was fired towards Israel during what state television said was an earlier strike around Damascus.
