Defense Minister Benny Gantz has shortened the list of candidates to be the IDF's next chief of staff to three names: Deputy Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Herzi Halevi, former Deputy Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Eyal Zamir, and head of the Ground Forces Command, Maj. Gen. Yoel Strick.

Gantz has spoken to each candidate privately and intends to consult with former chiefs of staff as well.
The current frontrunner for the appointment, according to the Kan public broadcaster, is Halevi.
Gantz has also met with Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and current Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Kochavi to discuss the candidates.
