The leader of Lebanon's powerful armed Hezbollah movement, Hassan Nasrallah, said Monday that any infringement of the decades-long status quo at the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem could lead to an explosion in the region, not just inside Judea and Samaria.

Nasrallah's comments followed a visit to the site revered by Muslims, but also Jews, earlier in the day by Israel's new National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who visited Temple Mount. The visit was within the allowed status quo, but has still caused an outcry.

"Any infringement of Al Aqsa Mosque and the sanctities of Muslims and Christians by the Zionists in Palestine and in Jerusalem could lead to an explosion, not only inside Palestine, but also in the in the entire region," the terrorist leader said.
In an apparent effort to calm anger over the visit, an official in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said the premier was fully committed to the status quo that allows only Muslim worship at the site.
Netanyahu returned to office in December for his sixth term as prime minister, leading a religious, right-wing government that relies on Ben-Gvir's party, Otzma Yehudit.
