Video posted to social media and verified by CNN showed the bus edging onto the tracks in heavy traffic before being struck by the train, which tore off its roof and dragged it along the rails. State authorities said the collision occurred on a highway in Atlacomulco.
Civil Protection General Coordinator Adrián Hernández told Milenio TV that police had detained the bus driver. Photos from the site revealed the bus roof nearly flattened and its front glass shattered.

Another clip online captured passersby pulling survivors through the destroyed upper deck. CNN reported it contacted the bus operator for comment.
Canadian Pacific Kansas City told CNN the train was operated by its subsidiary CPKC de Mexico and that it was working with investigators. "Our most sincere condolences go out to the families of the victims of this tragedy," a company spokesperson said.
The Atlacomulco City Council issued a message of condolence. "We express our most sincere solidarity with the affected families at this time," it said, pledging community support. Authorities shut the highway in both directions as rescue teams worked.
