Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi landed in Tehran on Saturday for what was officially described as "detailed discussions on bilateral relations and the prospects of renewing peace talks." He met with his Iranian counterpart, Eskandar Momeni, and other senior regime officials.
Official sources in Islamabad told Iran's ISNA news agency that Pakistan was trying to launch a serious and urgent mediation effort between Iran and the US. According to the sources, Pakistan is working with full seriousness and is trying to persuade both Tehran and Washington "to show flexibility in the negotiations" in order to prevent a slide into a full-scale regional war.
The urgent visit comes against the backdrop of reports about the possibility of renewed American-Israeli attacks on Iran. It also follows Iranian television broadcasts over the weekend, on Friday, that showed an unusual scene: In several different programs, studio presenters appeared holding rifles.

The presenters explained live on air that they were undergoing basic training in how to operate firearms, and declared that they would join the fighting if necessary. In one program, a presenter was even seen aiming a rifle at the flag of the United Arab Emirates.
Weapons experts who analyzed the videos noted that one of the rifles shown in the studios was an old East German assault rifle, an MPi-KMS. At this stage, however, the assessment is that this is only a symbolic show of force aimed at boosting public morale amid the growing tensions with Israel and the US.
