While many countries are investing in improving passport security, the United States has decided to upgrade the experience of receiving the document itself. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio unveiled a series of intriguing changes that will be gradually introduced into the passport issuance process, led by new premium packaging, interactive QR codes and a digital procedure that will eliminate the need to have a passport photo taken at a store.
Instead of arriving in a regular envelope, the passport will now be sent in a designer box, which Rubio said was intended to underscore the importance of the document. Inside the package, citizens will also receive a certificate of authenticity, similar to the documents that accompany luxury watches or jewelry.

"Today, the passport arrives in an envelope that can look like any other letter," Rubio said. "We wanted to turn receiving a passport into an experience that people will remember and keep."
But that is not the only surprise.
The new passports will also include QR codes that will lead to short videos about the historical events featured in the passport's illustrations. According to Rubio, the idea was born out of a thought for travelers who spend hours waiting in airports because of flight delays and will be able to use the time to learn about the history of the United States.
At the same time, the US State Department is working on another revolution: Almost the entire passport application process will be conducted online. Under the plan, applicants will be able to take their passport photo using the camera on their mobile phone or computer, while a facial recognition system checks in real time whether the image meets the requirements.
If the move is completed as planned, there will no longer be a need to go to a photography store or print passport photos. The goal is to shorten waiting times, reduce lines and make the passport application process faster and simpler.
The changes were unveiled ahead of celebrations marking 250 years of US independence, as part of which passports with a festive design will also be issued. The US State Department says the changes will take effect gradually in the coming months.
