Palestinian media reported Thursday that Hamas has arrested three suspects in the assassination attempt against Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah in Gaza City last week.
According to the reports, the prime suspect, Anas Abdul Malik Abu Khussa, managed to kill two security officers before he was apprehended in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the enclave's northeast.
Some reports claimed Abu Khussa was killed in a shootout with security forces.
The two other men arrested Thursday were not named.
Hamas' Interior Ministry confirmed that Gaza security forces were involved in a shootout in Nuseirat, but said nothing about casualties.
Hamdallah and PA security chief Majid Faraj's convoy was attacked by a roadside bomb in Gaza on March 13. They were unharmed.
Hamas, which rules the coastal enclave, had offered a $5,000 reward for information about Abu Khussa's whereabouts.
The manhunt for Abu Khussa was extensive and saw Hamas set up a number of checkpoints on Gaza streets, inspecting cars and asking for identification papers.
On Monday, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas accused Hamas of orchestrating the assassination attempt. His remarks cast a shadow over ongoing reconciliation moves, threatening to scuttle efforts to end the decade-old rift between Abbas' Fatah faction and the Hamas terrorist group.
Abbas offered no evidence of Hamas' involvement but said he did not trust Hamas to investigate the incident honestly, adding that there had been "zero" progress in reconciliation.
