This is the first time in 50 years that the Israeli ambassador to the US has held both positions.
Good luck, Gilad!
I am confident that our new Ambassador to Washington, @giladerdan1, will further strengthen the great alliance between America and Israel, and I wish him the best of success. pic.twitter.com/2jPlu0FDF7— Amb. Ron Dermer (@AmbDermer) January 20, 2021
Erdan assumes office at a particularly sensitive time, as Israel braces for new policies devised by US President Joe Biden. Jerusalem fears that these policies would be much less favorable than they were during the Trump administration.
Preparing for the role under a Democrat in the White House, Erdan is said to have been holding meetings with senior officials in the Democratic Party.
Erdan will be tasked with bolstering bipartisan support for Israel in the US.
Dermer is expected to return to Israel with his family after eight years in Washington.
