As Iranians marked Quds Day, a day of protest against Israel and Zionism, held on the last Friday of Ramadan, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei declared that Israel is "not a state."

Israel is a "garrison against the Palestinian people and other Muslim nations, Khamenei said in public remarks.

"The fight against this wretched regime is the fight against oppression and the fight against terrorism. And this is a public duty to fight against this regime," Khamenei said in a televised speech in honor of the day.
Khamenei's remarks came a day after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani denounced Israel as "the enemy" of the Middle East in comments leading up to Quds Day.
"The Zionists are the enemies of the region and of the security of the Palestinian people. They are the enemies of the nations of the region and the tormentors of the atrocities in history which have displaced millions of people from their homes," said Rouhani during a cabinet meeting.
