Twenty-three-year-old Khalid Mehdiyev was apprehended with an AK-47 assault rifle after lurking around Alinejad's apartment for two days. He was arrested after rolling through a stop sign and was discovered to have been driving without a license.
Mehdiyev initially claimed he had borrowed the car and was unaware that there was a weapon inside, but later admitted that he was in Brooklyn "because he was looking for someone."
Alinejad, who worked for years as a journalist in Iran, long has been targeted by its theocracy after fleeing the country following its disputed 2009 presidential election and crackdown and has recently spoken to Israel Hayom on her ordeal.
She is a prominent figure on Farsi-language satellite channels abroad that critically view Iran and has worked as a contractor for US-funded Voice of America's Farsi-language network since 2015. She became a US citizen in October 2019.
