Against the backdrop of tensions with Iran and security concerns, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu departed for Washington on Monday aboard the "Wing of Zion," Israel's official state aircraft, in a discreet departure without public remarks. The plane took off from Nevatim Air Force Base rather than Ben Gurion Airport, with the departure time kept secret and no journalists accompanying the flight.

The departure from standard procedure comes amid Iranian threats to avenge the elimination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. It also follows an incident on July 8 in which US President Donald Trump switched aircraft and flew from Turkey to London aboard the older Air Force One. According to reports, the change may have followed intelligence provided by Israel regarding an Iranian plot to assassinate Trump, as well as concerns that the newer presidential aircraft was not equipped with defensive systems against such threats.

"Expand the circle of peace"

Before departing for his visit to Washington, Netanyahu said: "I will discuss with President Trump all the issues on the agenda, first and foremost Iran. Our goal is to safeguard our security and also to expand the circle of peace around us."

Netanyahu added: "I am on my way to Washington for a meeting with our friend, President Donald Trump. This will be my eighth meeting with him since he was elected president for his second term, more than any other international leader. That is a great privilege, but it is also a great responsibility. From my experience as prime minister, in these complex times we must act with both great determination and great wisdom. We will discuss all the issues on the agenda, first and foremost Iran. Of course, our goal is to safeguard our security and also to expand the circle of peace around us."

The prime minister concluded: "I am embarking on this mission with one clear objective: to ensure the security, strength and future of our beloved State of Israel. I am also going for another purpose: to pay my final respects to our friend, a true friend of mine and of the State of Israel, Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest friends Israel has ever had. I am certain that in this regard, I also represent you, the citizens of Israel."
