A United Nations panel voted overwhelmingly in favor of a resolution backing the Palestinian right for self-determination and statehood on Thursday.
The General Assembly's Third Committee passed the draft resolution in a 163:5 vote, with 10 member states abstaining.

The document called for a swift end to the Israeli "occupation" of Palestinian lands.
It also calls for a "peace settlement" between Israel and the Palestinians on the basis of the two-state solution.
The resolution was part of a larger package of 20 documents aimed at the Israeli-Palestinian conflict – and usually centered on criticizing Israel – that the world body passes every year.
Israel and the United States voted against the proposal, while Canada, which usually supports the Jewish state, in these votes, chose to support the resolution.

The Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Nauru cast their votes against the proposal along with Israel and the US.
Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki welcomed the vote, saying it came partially as a response to US State Secretary Mike Pompeo visiting a Jewish community in Judea and Samaria in a historic trip on Thursday.
