Macklemore echoes Hamas; he shows West's ignorance

As Gen Z says, it's giving a white privileged male who has never set foot in the Middle East and has no understanding of what fighting for your life and living under the threat of a terrorist group looks like.

Once again, Jewish people have to endure another ignorant celebrity opening their mouths to talk about issues that they don't have the authority to speak on.

Over the weekend, American rapper Benjamin Haggerty, known as Macklemore, performed in Germany. During the concert, he called for a "Free Palestine" to a crowd of about 19,000 people. His actions are not surprising given that he released a new single titled Hinds Hall, an "anthem" style song that expresses support for the pro-Palestinian encampments on university campuses and calls for divestment from Israel and a ceasefire in the Israel–Hamas war. It sounds all nice and noble if it weren't for the fact that Hamas has actively vowed to repeat October 7 over and over again.

Macklemore began his speech by saying, "I will say that the atrocities that were the Holocaust, there will never be reparations for that." He then continued, "The only way that we can atone for our past is by today standing up against apartheid, against occupation, against genocide for free Palestine. That's the only way."

Ironic that he claims to care so much about the atrocities of the Holocaust while he simultaneously is supporting a movement that wants to finish what the Nazis started. What more can you expect from a rapper who dressed up as a Jewish caricature in one of his shows?

As Gen Z says, it's giving a white privileged male who has never set foot in the Middle East and has no understanding of what fighting for your life and living under the threat of a terrorist group looks like. For Macklemore to weaponize Jewish trauma and use the Holocaust to push his political agenda by pretending that he cares about Jewish people is unacceptable. Moreover, this is completely gaslighting Jewish people by calling for us to support the notion of a ceasefire with an entity that has vowed to genocide the Jewish people and repeat the October 7 atrocities. The irony is that he is doing all of this on German soil.

Macklemore is regurgitating buzzwords that pro-Hamas users throw around, like apartheid, colonization, and genocide, when those words have no bearing on what is happening in the region. He is the walking definition of Western ignorance and is applying his own experiences in the United States to a conflict thousands of miles away. If he had any idea what this conflict was about, then he would understand that it has nothing to do with skin color or white supremacy. If he truly understood the region, he would talk about the years of Islamic conquests that have led to some issues we see today. He would also speak about the various Iranian proxies whose aim is colonization and establishment of sharia law in the region. But he clearly has no idea; he is just an American rapper who is carrying the so-called white guilt over the problems his own country faces and attributing it to us.

Instead of pretending to be experts, celebrities sometimes need to step aside and give platform and space to people who are actually leaders and activists in this region. While a handful of brave celebrities actually came to Israel during the war (and some even went into Gaza), the vast majority of figures talking about what is happening between Israel and Hamas have likely never set foot in the region. Macklemore isn't just being hateful towards Jewish people with his words; he is being irresponsible and hurting both Israelis and Palestinians by attributing this conflict to his worldview. Macklemore is not the main character here; his issues back home have nothing to do with our problems on this side of the world. Speaking about this conflict the way he does perpetuates misinformation and creates greater animosity between both sides.

We all deserve better than this.
